Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday at the Great Hall of the People, reaffirming the longstanding strategic ties between the two nations and exploring new areas of cooperation under CPEC 2.0.
During the meeting, held as part of Zardari’s five-day visit to China, the two leaders emphasized the importance of high-level exchanges in enhancing bilateral relations and strengthening regional connectivity.
CPEC 2.0
Zardari expressed Pakistan’s firm commitment to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) 2.0, calling it a key driver of economic growth and regional connectivity.
Both sides agreed to expand collaborations under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), including potential third-party partnerships.
Praising China’s economic achievements, Zardari described Pakistan’s partnership with Beijing as “time-tested and enduring.”
The two leaders also witnessed the signing of multiple MoUs, covering science and technology, clean energy, media collaboration, and socio-economic development.
Attacks on Chinese nationals
The meeting comes amid rising security concerns for Chinese nationals in Pakistan, following a series of deadly attacks on CPEC-linked personnel.

Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, Pakistan has seen a surge in militant violence, including the March 2024 attack that killed five Chinese engineers and a November assault near Karachi airport.
Chinese officials have repeatedly urged Islamabad to ensure the security of its workers and projects, warning that instability could jeopardize investments.
Xi’s invitation
Zardari formally invited Xi to visit Pakistan, stating that the Pakistani people view him as a close friend and visionary leader.
Earlier in the day, Zardari received a ceremonial guard of honor and attended a state banquet hosted by Xi, marking the latest step in Pakistan-China diplomatic engagements.
