Pakistan's largest Province, Punjab's Counter Terrorism Department, has arrested Muhammad Saad Riaz, a researcher and commentator affiliated with digital platform EonHoldings, on charges of links to the banned militant organisation Al-Qaeda.

His family disputes the official account of the arrest, alleging he was taken from his home in an unannounced night raid without a warrant.

What are the CTD's charges against Muhammad Saad Riaz?

The CTD registered a case against Riaz under the Anti-Terrorism Act, alleging he was a member of Al-Qaeda and was attempting to recruit individuals for the outfit. According to the FIR, Riaz was arrested from Masjid Hanfia Ghousia on March 27, 2026, where authorities claim he was distributing prohibited literature and promoting extremist ideology. A membership card linked to Al-Qaeda was allegedly recovered from his possession during the operation.

What does Saad Riaz's family say happened during the arrest?

Riaz's wife, Ayesha A. Qayyum, posted a statement on X alleging that 12 to 13 masked men entered their home at around 3:30am and took her husband away without presenting a warrant or any lawful authority.

She described the detention as "an unlawful deprivation of liberty" and a "direct violation of due process." She also alleged the FIR was only registered later, under legal pressure, to retroactively justify the detention.

Her account has drawn attention because the official FIR places Riaz at a mosque engaged in open recruitment activity, an allegation some observers say would likely have drawn immediate public attention if it had occurred in such a setting.

CTD sources, speaking to Nukta, maintained the department does not make arrests without evidence and said Riaz remains under investigation. The department has not publicly addressed the allegations of procedural irregularities.

Who is Muhammad Saad Riaz, and what work did he do?

People close to Riaz describe him as a researcher, journalist, and Political Science scholar, not a militant sympathiser. His work is said to have focused on conflict and information dynamics in regions including Kashmir, Gaza, Afghanistan, and Syria, examining narrative warfare, strategic communications, and geopolitical discourse.

His wife also stated he had previously been vetted and cleared by state institutions for work aligned with national interests, calling the charges deeply contradictory.

What wider counterterrorism operations did Punjab CTD announce?

On Saturday morning, Punjab CTD issued a broader statement announcing the arrest of 21 alleged militants linked to various banned organisations, including Fitna al-Khawarij, across the province.

The department said 214 intelligence-led operations were conducted across multiple districts, with 215 suspects questioned and arrests made in Lahore, Khushab, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, and other cities.

Recovered items included 6,330 grams of explosives, 17 detonators, one IED, banned literature, membership cards, and cash.

Officials said those arrested were allegedly planning attacks to spread fear among citizens, with 20 separate cases registered. The statement did not specifically mention Saad Riaz or indicate whether his arrest was linked to this wider crackdown.
