Saim’s maiden ODI ton powers Pakistan to series-leveling win against Zimbabwe

The confident batting performance contrasted with the visitor’s meek showing in Sunday’s opening clash when the hosts won by 80 runs on the DLS method after rain brought play to an early close.

Saim Ayub hammered a swashbuckling century to lead Pakistan to a commanding 10-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the second ODI at Queens Sports Club, leveling the three-match series.

Chasing a modest target of 146, Pakistan cruised to 148 without loss in just 18.2 overs after bowling Zimbabwe out for 145 in 32.3 overs.

Super Saim

The 22-year-old Saim delivered a stunning display of power-hitting, smashing his maiden ODI century in just 53 balls and remaining unbeaten on 113.

His innings was a masterclass in all-round stroke play, with shots dispatched to every corner of the field.

"Pitch was still slow from one end but it was better on the other end but we are not prepared for one type pitches we have to bat everywhere in all conditions," Saim said in the post-match presentation.

The left-hander's 53-ball century is the joint third-fastest by a Pakistani in ODIs, sharing the spot with Shahid Afridi.

His opening partner, Abdullah Shafique, played a steady supporting role, remaining not out on 32.

Zimbabwe batting falters

Pakistan’s bowling unit, spearheaded by Abrar Ahmed (4-33) and Salman Ali Agha (3-26), dismantled Zimbabwe’s batting lineup.

Abrar struck early, claiming his first ODI wicket, while Salman’s accurate spin stifled Zimbabwe's attempts to build partnerships.

Dion Myers’ brisk 33 off 30 balls provided a bright start for the hosts, but regular breakthroughs ensured no other batter could significantly contribute. Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza tried to steady the innings but succumbed to Pakistan’s disciplined attack.

A lower-order collapse saw Zimbabwe lose their last five wickets for just 24 runs, with Faisal Akram cleaning up the tail.

Reflecting on the match, Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan credited the collective effort, saying, "Faisal Akram and Abrar Ahmed set the stage with brilliant performances, and Saim Ayub capitalized with a fantastic knock. Our focus is now on the next game."

This emphatic win was a stark contrast to Pakistan's defeat in the rain-affected first ODI, where Zimbabwe secured an 80-run victory under the DLS method.

The teams will face off in the series decider on Thursday in Bulawayo, followed by a three-match T20I series.
