In a groundbreaking leap for luxury travel in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) and Italian hospitality company Arsenale have officially revealed the designs for Dream of the Desert, the region’s first-ever five-star luxury train. The highly anticipated announcement, which coincided with the visit of the Italian Prime Minister, marks a significant step forward in the collaboration between SAR and Arsenale, first formalized last year. Dream of the Desert will be a stunning fusion of innovation and tradition, with interiors inspired by Saudi Arabia’s majestic desert landscapes and timeless architecture.

Rich earthy tones, opulent fabrics, and intricate craftsmanship will define the aesthetic, while design elements influenced by Mada’in Saleh, Hail, and other iconic landmarks will immerse passengers in the nation’s history and natural beauty.

This ambitious project aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims to elevate high-end tourism and showcase the country’s rich cultural identity. The train will feature 14 elegantly designed carriages and 34 ultra-luxurious suites, offering an exclusive, intimate travel experience akin to a five-star hotel on wheels. Passengers can expect world-class service and a once-in-a-lifetime journey through Saudi Arabia’s most awe-inspiring heritage sites.

Running from Riyadh along the Northern Railway network, the train will pass through some of the Kingdom’s most breathtaking landscapes, offering a front-row seat to the country’s diverse beauty. To enrich the journey, passengers will experience curated cultural programs, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, providing deeper insights into Saudi traditions and customs.

Additionally, the Saudi Tourism Authority and the Center for Development Authorities Support are crafting bespoke itineraries, seamlessly integrating with the train’s route to further enhance the overall experience.

Eng. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Transport and Chairman of SAR, emphasized the project’s strategic importance, noting its role in advancing the country’s transport and logistics strategy:

"The National Transport and Logistics Strategy aims to develop an integrated transport network that strengthens Saudi Arabia's position as a global logistics hub. The Dream of the Desert train is a testament to our commitment to this vision, delivering innovative solutions that elevate both the transport and tourism sectors. The train combines luxury, innovation, and cultural authenticity, setting a new standard in rail travel."

For Paolo Barletta, CEO of Arsenale, Dream of the Desert represents more than just luxury travel—it’s a cultural odyssey:

"We wanted to offer something completely unique, an immersive experience that blends refined design with the rich traditions of Saudi Arabia. Working with SAR, the Ministry of Culture, and the Saudi Tourism Authority has been key in bringing this vision to life,"

The interiors of the train have been meticulously designed to reflect Saudi Arabia’s artistic and cultural heritage. Lounges take inspiration from traditional Saudi majlis settings, featuring hand-carved wooden details and intricate geometric patterns, evoking the warmth and hospitality of the Kingdom. Onboard dining will showcase a gourmet menu curated by top local and international chefs, blending heritage flavors with modern culinary sophistication.

As passengers move through the corridors, they will be surrounded by carefully curated art and photography, celebrating Saudi Arabia’s cultural and natural wonders. Every element has been thoughtfully designed, ensuring that travelers are not just surrounded by luxury—but are fully immersed in the essence of the Kingdom itself.

With its grand debut expected by the end of 2026, Dream of the Desert is set to redefine luxury rail travel in Saudi Arabia, offering an unforgettable blend of comfort, culture, and adventure. More than just a train, it promises an extraordinary journey—one that will be remembered for a lifetime.
