Former international star Nolberto Solano had a dismal debut as head coach of Pakistan’s Under-23 football team as they suffered a crushing 8-1 defeat at the hands of Iraq in their opening match of the AFC Under-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers on Wednesday.

The Group G encounter was held at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where Iraq dominated proceedings, particularly in the second half.

At halftime, Iraq led 1-0 but they exploded in the second half with seven more goals, powered by a hat-trick from Ali Jasim Elaibi. Pakistan’s only consolation came through McKeal Abdullah, who scored in the 61st minute.

It was in that same first half, where Solano was shown the red card for arguing with the referee after a penalty was awarded to Iraq. Gohar Zaman handled the team in the second half as Solano is now suspended for the next game.

Alongside Elaibi’s treble (47’, 66’, 72’), Ahmed Ayyed Al-Aridhee netted a brace (78’, 90+4’), while Faisal Amori (32’), Dhulfiqar Younus Al-Imari (83’) and Ali Sadeq Shaheen (85’) also found the back of the net for Iraq. Amori’s opener came from the penalty spot.

Despite a promising start, Pakistan crumbled after conceding the first goal. Former national head coach Shehzad Anwar, speaking to Nukta analyzed the team’s poor showing.

“Pakistan played well in the first half but performance depends on the team’s condition and maturity,” Anwar said.

“They lacked energy and experience. After conceding, especially after the third goal, they were completely demoralised and exhausted. The team shape collapsed.”

He criticized the tactical execution, noting a lack of defensive compactness and poor midfield control.

“There was too much penetration through the midfield. The ball was easily lost inside the defensive line. If you work hard to win the ball you must keep possession but they couldn’t do that,” he added.

Anwar also questioned Solano’s team selection, particularly leaving experienced Abdul Rahman who also plays for the senior national side on the bench.

“I think the coach miscalculated his players’ capacity and also miscalculated Iraq’s strength. Talent alone is not enough. Hard work, smart decisions, commitment are crucial. You did not use Abdul Rahman. That was a big miss.”

He praised goalkeeper Najeeb for his efforts, stating, “Najeeb saved at least eight more goals.”

Pakistan will next face hosts Cambodia on September 6 at the same venue.

A total of 44 teams are competing in the qualifiers, divided into 11 groups. The 11 group winners and the four best second-placed teams will advance to the AFC U23 Asian Cup finals.
