UAE scientists reach new milestone in Antarctic research
The UAE experts conducted research on climate change, ice melting, and global weather patterns in Antarctica.
The UAE has completed its first-ever scientific mission to Antarctica, installing weather monitoring stations.
The mission aligns with the UAE's commitment to climate research and international collaboration.
The stations will provide crucial data for global weather forecasts and seismic monitoring.
The United Arab Emirates has successfully completed its first-ever scientific mission to Antarctica, marking a significant milestone in the country’s commitment to climate research and international collaboration.
The expedition, conducted in partnership with the Bulgarian Antarctic Research Institute, saw UAE scientists install two advanced weather and seismic monitoring stations in one of the world’s most extreme environments.
These stations will provide crucial data to improve global weather forecasts and seismic monitoring.
“This marks a huge step in the UAE’s scientific exploration and global cooperation,” said Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, chair of the Emirates Polar Program and the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court.
Advancing climate research
The mission aligns with the UAE’s long-term commitment to tackling climate change through science and innovation. Despite freezing temperatures, strong winds, and complete isolation, UAE experts conducted research on climate change, ice melting, and global weather patterns, enhancing scientific understanding of the region.
To document the mission, the team used virtual reality technology, allowing audiences to experience the expedition and the challenges faced in Antarctica.
Strengthening global collaboration
Dr. Abdullah Al Mandous, director-general of the National Center of Meteorology and president of the World Meteorological Organization, highlighted the mission’s impact.
“This expedition strengthens the UAE’s leadership in climate research and weather forecasting,” he said. “Our team’s success in such a remote and challenging environment demonstrates the expertise and dedication of our national scientists.”
A vision for the future
The mission is part of the newly launched Emirates Polar Program, which aims to expand the UAE’s role in international climate science. As part of the Dubai Self-Driving Strategy, the country is working toward 25% autonomous trips by 2030, reinforcing its focus on sustainability and innovation.
Through these efforts, the UAE continues to position itself as a leader in climate research, working alongside global partners to develop solutions for a sustainable future.
