Zayed University, a public university in the United Arab Emirates, has received a Gold award in the Merit in Innovative Practices category at the NASPA MENASA Recognition Awards, according to the state-run Emirates News Agency (WAM).

The award recognizes the university’s “Uniquely ZU” initiative, which the university says is designed to reshape the student experience through an integrated skills and capabilities framework supported by a digital platform.

NASPA is a global professional association focused on advancing student success through research, professional development and collaboration among higher education institutions.

The MENASA awards recognize excellence and innovation in student affairs across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, according to WAM.

Zayed University said the “Uniquely ZU” initiative combines a development framework with gamification to enrich co-curricular learning. Students can track their progress, earn recognition and present achievements through a skills-led co-curricular transcript.

The recognition reflects what the university described as an integrated skills and capabilities framework that has changed how student development is delivered across campus.

For the university’s Student Affairs team, the award marks three years of work aimed at building a more connected and skills-driven student journey, according to WAM.

Jane Tatterton, assistant provost for student affairs, said the award reflected the commitment of the team behind the initiative.

“This award is a testament to the passion and commitment of our Student Affairs team,” Tatterton said, according to WAM. She said the program reflects the belief that education extends beyond the classroom by embedding skill development throughout the student journey.

More than 2,500 first-year students have already engaged with the framework through foundational courses and activities, the university said, according to WAM.

Pilot cohorts tested advanced pathways before the initiative was expanded, and full capability integration and rollout to all students took place in May 2025.
