US approves $5 billion sale of precision bombs and guidance kits to Saudi Arabia

According to official notifications submitted to Congress by the State Department's Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, the package centers on replenishing stockpiles of precision-guided weaponry. The requested FMS package includes:

• Guidance Kits: 5,004 KMU-572 Joint Direct Attack Munition Extended Range (JDAM-ER) guidance kits and 5,000 KMU-556 JDAM guidance kits.
• General-Purpose Bombs: 5,004 BLU-111 500-pound general-purpose bombs and 5,000 BLU-117 2,000-pound general-purpose bombs.
• Logistics & Support: FMU-139 fuze systems, DSU-38 and DSU-40 target detectors, containers, spare parts, and specialized engineering and technical support services from Boeing and US government personnel.

In a parallel notification, the State Department cleared a separate $750 million potential sale to Saudi Arabia for 60 AGT-1500 tank engines, manufactured by Honeywell, to support the Saudi military's M1 Abrams main battle tank fleet.
