100,000 palm seedlings to transform UAE schools in nationwide green initiative
Students and school staff will receive training on effective tree planting techniques, as well as tree care and maintenance.
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, has launched the ‘100,000 Seedlings’ initiative, aimed at distributing 100,000 palm seedlings to public schools across the UAE.
The first batch of seedlings, totaling 15,000, was distributed during a launch event at the Mohammed Bin Khalid School in Al Ain. The seedlings were provided by the Khalifa Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and Jenaan Investment Company.
“The ‘Plant the Emirates’ National Programme and the initiatives led by the National Agriculture Centre have gained significant momentum in promoting sustainable agricultural practices and encouraging community participation in greening efforts across the UAE,” said Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment.
“It aims to supply the sector with skilled national talents and farmers capable of shaping the future of agriculture and driving the country’s environmental efforts forward.” she added.
Workshops, volunteers, and green schools
The Environment Friends Society is actively engaging volunteers, including school students and community members, to help distribute and plant the seedlings as part of the initiative’s first phase.
In addition to distributing seedlings, the program will host workshops and training sessions for school staff and students. These sessions will focus on proper tree planting techniques, tree care, and maintenance to ensure healthy growth. Participants will also learn about the significance of various tree species in promoting environmental balance, combating climate change, and preserving natural ecosystems.
The initiative seeks to transform schools into green oases, aligning with the UAE’s vision of fostering a culture of greening, encouraging planting, and strengthening the connection between society and nature. It also underscores the UAE’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, community engagement, and enhancing national food security.
