Maritime cooperation between Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates is making significant strides, with discussions progressing on Emirati investments in Bangladeshi ports, a top Bangladeshi official said.
Speaking to Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the World Maritime Day Parallel Event 2025 in Dubai, M. Sakhawat Hussain, adviser for shipping in the Government of Bangladesh, said key Emirati ports, including Abu Dhabi and Dubai, have expressed strong interest in investing in Bangladesh’s port infrastructure, particularly in the development and expansion of Chittagong Port.
“These prospective investments reflect mutual trust between our nations,” Hussain said. “They demonstrate the UAE’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s maritime growth.”
Strategic port talks underway
Hussain confirmed that preliminary talks have been held with multiple Emirati entities regarding the potential acquisition and operational management of a major port in Bangladesh.
He described the talks as a “key step” in building long-term strategic maritime relations between the two countries.
The interest from the UAE builds on existing projects in Bangladesh’s shipping sector, including the ongoing development of the ‘AP’ terminal at Chittagong Port and the operation of a container terminal by Dubai-based logistics giant DP World.
Infrastructure upgrades and foreign support
Chittagong Port, the country’s busiest maritime hub, is also undergoing a $680 million World Bank-backed modernization project, which includes the construction of breakwaters and dredging of key navigational channels. These improvements are expected to be completed by next spring and are aimed at boosting the port’s capacity and regional competitiveness.
Hussain emphasized the importance of continued engagement with Gulf nations, especially the UAE, to advance Bangladesh’s maritime agenda. He also acknowledged the UAE’s backing of Bangladesh’s candidacy in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) elections.
Regional vision for growth
The expanding maritime partnership underscores a shared ambition to grow regional trade, enhance economic ties, and build resilient shipping infrastructure across the Gulf and South Asia.
“Our efforts are not just about infrastructure,” Dr. Hussain said. “They are about establishing long-term commercial connectivity and fostering economic growth for both nations.”
