At least five civilians were killed and 13 others wounded in a suicide bombing targeting a police station in Bannu district, northwestern Pakistan, on Thursday night, authorities said.
Police said the explosion occurred when an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into the Domel Police Station, triggering a powerful blast.
Bakhtullah Wazir, District Emergency Officer, described the scene as devastating. “The blast was so powerful it could be heard miles away, causing extensive damage to nearby homes. Several houses collapsed, and a number of people were trapped under debris,” he said.
The attack also destroyed the police station’s sentry post, reducing a large portion of the building to rubble.
Hospital officials confirmed that the victims include a husband, wife, their son and daughter, and another young girl. Among the injured are six women and a police officer.
Residents reported a prolonged exchange of gunfire between security forces and the attackers that lasted for hours, intensifying fear in the surrounding communities. Authorities said security forces had cordoned off the area and launched a clearance operation. “The quantity of explosives used is still being assessed,” officials added.
No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) publicly denied involvement, though armed groups including the TTP, Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan (IMP), and the Hafiz Gul Bahadur faction remain active in the region, with a history of targeting security personnel, government officials, and infrastructure.
Islamabad has accused neighboring Afghanistan of failing to crack down on militants allegedly sheltering on Afghan soil - a claim denied by the Taliban government.
Bannu, near Pakistan’s former tribal districts along the Afghan border, has long been vulnerable to militant attacks. Despite sustained counterterrorism operations, insurgent groups continue to exploit the area’s rugged terrain and ongoing security challenges.
