Pakistan’s Meteorological Department (PMD) on Saturday warned that cyclone 'Shakhti' has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the northeast Arabian Sea and is currently located about 390 kilometers south-southwest of Karachi.
According to the PMD, the storm is moving west-southwest and is expected to reach the northwest and adjoining central parts of the north Arabian Sea by October 5. It is likely to recurve toward the east-northeast over the following 24 hours, gradually weakening thereafter.
Under the cyclone’s influence, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected in several southern districts of Pakistan, including Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Jamshoro, Hub, Lasbela, Awaran, Kech, and isolated parts of Karachi Division.
The Met Office has warned that sea conditions will remain rough to very rough, with wind speeds of 40–50 km/h gusting up to 55 km/h near the Sindh coast. Fishermen have been strongly advised to avoid venturing into deep sea waters until October 5.
Near the cyclone’s center, gale-force winds of up to 110 km/h are expected through the evening of October 4, increasing to 125 km/h over the next 36 hours before gradually weakening. Sea conditions over the central and northern Arabian Sea are expected to remain very rough to high, with potentially hazardous waves.
The PMD’s Cyclone Warning Center in Karachi said it was closely monitoring the system and would issue further updates. Authorities have been urged to remain on alert and follow official advisories.
