Passengers travelling through Dubai International Airport will no longer be required to remove laptops, liquids or other electronics from their hand luggage as the airport rolls out advanced AI-based security scanners, The National reported.

Dubai Airports is upgrading more than 100 hand-luggage screening machines across all terminals, a move that will significantly speed up security checks and improve passenger convenience.

Chief executive Paul Griffiths said the new systems allow travelers to place bags directly on trays and walk through screening without stopping.

The scanners use artificial intelligence to analyze luggage contents and flag potential risks, reducing the need for manual inspections while maintaining security standards. Several of the machines are already operational, with full deployment expected later this year.

The upgrade will also end long-standing restrictions on carrying liquids over 100 milliliters in cabin baggage, rules that have been in place since 2007 following global aviation security changes. The initiative forms part of Dubai Airports’ broader push toward barrier-free travel, which also includes expanded use of biometric identification and facial recognition at immigration checkpoints.

Griffiths said the goal is to create a faster, non-intrusive security experience while handling record passenger volumes, positioning DXB as a testing ground for technologies that could later be deployed at Dubai’s second airport, Al Maktoum International.
