Electricity users in Pakistan will soon face another major tariff hike as prices are expected to increase under a proposed fuel cost adjustment.
Authorities have indicated that power tariffs could rise by PKR 1.64 per unit for February, as the government is forced to use expensive furnace oil for power generation due to the unavailability of cheaper LNG.
A hearing on the request for the monthly fuel adjustment is scheduled for Tuesday.
The proposed increase, if implemented, will apply to electricity consumers across the country. It would place an additional financial burden of more than PKR 14 billion on consumers.
According to the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), a total of 7.7 billion units of electricity were generated in February, while 7.43 billion units were supplied to distribution companies.
The CPPA reported that the cost of electricity supplied to distribution companies stood at PKR 8.37 per unit, while the overall cost of power generation was slightly lower at PKR 8.15 per unit. The reference cost for electricity during February was recorded at PKR 6.73 per unit.
