Pakistan’s largest telecom operator, Jazz, has deposited $15 million as pre-bid earnest money with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), formally confirming its participation in the country’s upcoming internet spectrum auction scheduled for March 10.

The payment completes the lineup of major mobile network operators entering the high-stakes auction, as Ufone and Zong had already fulfilled the regulator’s pre-bid requirements.

Under PTA’s framework, bidders are required to submit earnest money to qualify for participation in the spectrum auction.

“The earnest money requirement ensures that only serious and committed players enter the bidding process,” an industry expert said.

"We are confident that strong participation from all major operators will create a competitive environment and maximize the value of this national asset.”

Telecom analysts have said the deposit showed the company's commitment to next-generation connectivity.

“By submitting the pre-bid earnest money, the company has formally signaled our intent to compete for the spectrum".

According to a telecom industry source, the auction will be considered successful if at least 50% of the total 597 MHz spectrum on offer — approximately 300 MHz — is allocated to operators.

Government officials have indicated that proceeds from the auction could exceed $600 million, depending on bidding dynamics and final spectrum pricing.

Industry analysts note that the March 10 auction is being closely watched by investors and policymakers, as it will determine the pace of Pakistan’s 5G deployment.

Telecom sector stakeholders say the level of competition in the bidding process will shape network investment plans and the timeline for commercial 5G rollout nationwide.

A senior official at the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication said the government views the auction as a “strategic milestone.”

“5G is not just about faster mobile internet,” the official stated. “It will unlock opportunities in digital services, industrial automation, smart cities, and advanced connectivity solutions. The auction marks the beginning of that journey.”
