The Jordanian military announced that its air defense systems successfully intercepted eight missiles fired from Iran on Thursday.
The Islamic Republic claimed it targeted an American military command center within the kingdom amid escalating hostilities between Tehran and Washington.
Why did Iran target a military base after Jordan intercepted eight missiles?
Iran launched ballistic weapons to strike a United States command center and air base in response to ongoing American airstrikes. The Revolutionary Guards aimed to degrade Western military capabilities in West Asia while warning that other regional bases face imminent heavy fire.
The recent cross-border missile fire occurred during a second consecutive day of intense tit-for-tat aerial barrages between American and Iranian forces.
Hundreds of United States airstrikes hit targets inside Iran, severely testing a fragile ceasefire as both foes battle over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Jordanian authorities confirmed that the emergency sirens were activated across multiple districts immediately after the foreign projectiles breached national sovereign airspace.
Military officials stated that the successful aerial defensive operations resulted in the fall of a number of fragments across the ground. The descending shrapnel caused no human casualties or material property damage, and commanders vowed they would not allow any future airspace violations.
This defensive action marks the first time Amman has announced downing Iranian projectiles since its border forces destroyed twenty incoming weapons on June 11.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards stated they specifically targeted the enemy command facility located near the remote Azraq region with ten ballistic missiles.
This specific location hosts a major Jordanian military air installation from which international coalition forces previously operated during counter-terrorism combat campaigns. The complex serves as a primary logistical hub for deployed German, Belgian, French, and American troops under strict bilateral training agreements.
How many Iranian missiles has Jordan intercepted during the conflict?
Amman repeatedly insists that the sovereign kingdom does not permanently host foreign military bases on its territory despite the active international deployments.
Government officials emphasize that only limited foreign forces remain stationed at select local bases to facilitate regional security cooperation and military training. However, the ongoing cross-border warfare continues to push local defense systems to their absolute limits as regional escalation spreads across neighboring states.
The Jordanian army announced that 281 missiles and drones from Iran had targeted the kingdom since the war began on February 28.
Specialized air defense networks successfully tracked and destroyed 261 of those incoming aerial threats to protect vulnerable local civilian populations. Authorities reported that those historical attacks wounded 30 people within the country, all of whom have since been safely discharged from hospitals.
