Pakistan's Oil and Gas Development Company Ltd. (OGDCL) signed an agreement with Canada's Synergetic Oil Tools Inc. on Monday to deploy advanced flow assurance technology in the country's heavy oil fields.
The deal aims to increase crude oil production from reservoirs that have proven difficult to develop.
What technology will OGDCL use to boost heavy oil production?
Synergetic Oil Tools will deploy its Passive Energy Tool technology in OGDCL's heavy oil wells to improve production performance.
The technology is designed to enhance the flow characteristics of heavy crude, reduce the frequency of well workovers, minimize downtime, lower operating costs and cut the use of production chemicals.
Where was the OGDCL-Synergetic agreement signed?
The agreement was signed at OGDCL headquarters in Islamabad in the presence of Canada's High Commissioner to Pakistan, Tariq Ali Khan, and OGDCL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Hayat Lak.
Synergetic Oil Tools President and Chief Executive Officer Brian Herman joined the ceremony virtually. Senior representatives of OGDCL, the Canadian High Commission and the company also attended.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Lak said the partnership reflects OGDCL's commitment to adopting advanced technologies to address production challenges in heavy oil reservoirs. "OGDCL continues to explore collaboration opportunities with leading global technology providers to improve production efficiency and maximize output from mature and technically challenging oil fields," he said.
Lak added that he was confident the technology would significantly reduce the need for well workovers, lower operating costs and improve overall production efficiency. Canadian High Commissioner Tariq Ali Khan said cooperation between Pakistan and Canada in the energy and critical minerals sectors remains important. He added that the technology's introduction is expected to support the development of Pakistan's upstream oil industry.
