Pakistan’s Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee announced Sunday that the Shawwal moon has been sighted, marking the end of holy month of Ramadan. Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated nationwide on Monday.

The committee, led by Chairman Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad, convened at the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Kohsar Block to confirm the sighting. Officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Meteorological Department, Ministry of Science and Technology, and SUPARCO provided technical assistance during the proceedings.

"We can confirm that the Shawwal moon has been sighted," said Chairman Azad in Islamabad.

Weather officials reported exceptionally clear skies in Islamabad and surrounding areas, making it possible to view the crescent moon with the naked eye.

Reports indicate that some areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province had already begun Eid celebrations a day earlier, following separate moon sighting announcements.

Government officials have announced a three-day public holiday, with banks, educational institutions and government offices remaining closed through Wednesday.

Meanwhile, transportation authorities reported a surge in travel as millions return to their hometowns for the festivities. Major bus terminals and railway stations in Karachi, Lahore and other major cities experienced heavy congestion as families embarked on their journeys.

Markets stayed open late into the night as shoppers made final purchases for the celebration, which typically involves morning prayers, family gatherings and traditional meals.

The Interior Ministry has implemented heightened security measures at mosques and public spaces during the holiday period.
