The Islamabad High Court directed prison authorities on Tuesday to submit a comprehensive report regarding allegations of solitary confinement against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi.

The judiciary ruled that these serious claims of unlawful treatment inside Adiala Jail cannot be ignored or dismissed without a formal administrative response.

Why is the high court investigating allegations of solitary confinement against Imran Khan?

The high court is investigating the matter because the original sentencing guidelines for the prisoners only mandated rigorous and simple imprisonment for non-payment of fines. Since the trial court never awarded solitary confinement, any unlawful isolation of the inmates inside Adiala Jail violates legal boundaries and human rights.

Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro issued a detailed 10-page written order on the official petitions filed by Aleema Khan and Mubashra Maneka.

The legal filings formally challenged the restrictive conditions and unlawful isolation imposed upon the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder and his spouse. The court observed that claims of illegal prison treatment could neither be ignored nor rejected without obtaining a verified factual report from the respondents.

Available judicial records confirm that both high-profile prisoners had been sentenced to standard imprisonment terms in the event of non-payment of financial fines. However, the high court explicitly noted that the trial court did not incorporate solitary confinement into any part of its official criminal sentences. Therefore, the current administrative restrictions implemented inside the facility require immediate legal clarification from the superintendent to ensure full constitutional compliance.

During the formal court proceedings, the National Accountability Bureau prosecutor firmly denied all allegations of illegal treatment presented by the defense council. The state prosecutor argued that the claims of the former prime minister being kept in strict isolation were entirely fabricated and false. He further asserted that the opposition party was systematically raising these prison condition grievances solely to achieve specific political purposes and media attention.

What actions must the Adiala Jail superintendent take next?

The Islamabad High Court formally directed the Superintendent of Adiala Jail to submit a detailed, fact-based report concerning the actual cell conditions.

The administrator must present the comprehensive prison logs and official visitor records to the judiciary during the upcoming scheduled tracking phase. This mandatory report will allow the high court to independently verify the environment of the inmates and rule on the legal petitions.
