Pakistan government reaffirms commitment to wheat market deregulation

Pakistan government has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing wheat market deregulation, ensuring no restrictions on wheat movement, as part of the requirements set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Federal Minister for Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, emphasized the importance of unrestricted wheat movement across the country, the adoption of modern agricultural practices and technology-driven solutions.

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR), in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), hosted a significant event in Islamabad.

Industry representatives pledged investments in modern storage facilities and supply chain optimization.

Secretary MNFSR, Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry, highlighted the importance of a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach to wheat market reforms.

Oliver Durand, Lead Agriculture Specialist at the World Bank, pointed out Pakistan’s low wheat productivity and the necessity for strategic investments in the value chain to boost efficiency.

Private sector voiced their support for deregulation, emphasizing that an open-market system would drive innovation, competition, and investment.
