The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has launched an expansion project for Skardu International Airport, aiming to modernize the facility and strengthen tourism and air connectivity in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The authority confirmed the project this week.

What does the Skardu airport expansion include?

The project will expand Skardu International Airport's terminal building from 21,000 square feet to 39,000 square feet. It also covers larger departure and arrival lounges, more check-in counters, tripled vehicle parking and a new cargo office block. The work is meant to help the airport handle a growing number of domestic and international travelers.

How much will passenger capacity increase?

Under the plan, the departure lounge will be enlarged to accommodate 900 passengers, up from its current capacity of 300. The arrival lounge will be expanded from 80 passengers to 200 passengers. Executive lounges will also be built in both the departure and arrival areas to improve passenger facilities.

What other upgrades are planned at the airport?

To increase operational efficiency, the number of check-in and briefing counters will rise from six to 10, the PAA said. Vehicle parking capacity will be tripled from 200 vehicles to 600 vehicles as part of the modernization effort. The plan also includes a modern cargo office block, which the authority said will support logistics and commercial activity in the region.

Why is the PAA expanding Skardu International Airport?

According to the PAA, the project is intended to provide improved travel facilities for tourists and other passengers. It is also meant to support tourism, economic growth and air connectivity across Gilgit-Baltistan, a mountainous region in northern Pakistan. PAA spokesperson Saifullah Khan said the project is currently in its initial phase, with site marking and layout work already underway.
