Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to stronger ties with Iran on Tuesday, as it prepares to send a new ambassador to Tehran amid broader efforts to deepen cooperation in trade, connectivity and regional diplomacy.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar conveyed the message during a meeting with Ambassador-designate Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, who is set to take up his posting in the Iranian capital. The statement was issued by Pakistan's Foreign Office.

What is the current state of Pakistan-Iran relations?

Pakistan-Iran relations are at an active stage, with Islamabad deepening diplomatic engagement on multiple fronts.

The appointment of a new ambassador follows recent high-level visits and Pakistan's role as a key mediator in stalled Iran-US peace talks. Dar described the two countries as bound by "deep-rooted historical, cultural and fraternal ties."

What did Ishaq Dar say about Pakistan-Iran ties?

Dar underscored what he called the "deep-rooted historical, cultural and fraternal ties" between the two neighbors and reaffirmed Islamabad's intent to broaden engagement across key sectors.

He stressed the need to enhance cooperation in trade, regional connectivity and people-to-people exchanges. Dar also called for sustained diplomatic coordination to maintain positive momentum in the bilateral relationship.

The deputy prime minister highlighted Pakistan's "constructive and responsible role" in promoting regional peace and stability. He expressed confidence that the incoming envoy would help advance the longstanding partnership between Islamabad and Tehran. Dar extended his best wishes to Siddiqui ahead of the assignment.

What role is Pakistan playing in Iran-US diplomacy?

Pakistan has positioned itself as a key intermediary in efforts to revive stalled Iran-US negotiations, with senior officials making recent visits to Tehran.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi completed a two-day visit to the Iranian capital last week, where he met President Masoud Pezeshkian and Iran's interior minister. Pakistan has also shared revised Iranian peace proposals with Washington in an effort to keep talks from collapsing.

Alongside the mediation efforts, Pakistan and Iran have been actively pursuing expanded economic ties.

Discussions on the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project have been revived, and both sides have set a target of four billion dollars in bilateral barter trade. Officials have also discussed opening new border crossing points and easing trade procedures to boost cross-border transit.
