Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar arrived in New York on Tuesday for a three-day official visit from May 26 to 28, during which he will address a high-level UN Security Council debate and hold bilateral meetings with foreign counterparts and senior UN officials.
What will Pakistan's foreign minister do at the UN Security Council?
Dar will participate in an open debate themed "Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centered International System."
The meeting is being held under China's presidency, as Beijing currently chairs the Security Council.
According to Pakistan's Foreign Office, Dar is expected to present Pakistan's perspective on key international peace and security issues and reaffirm the country's commitment to multilateralism and the principles of the U.N. Charter. Pakistan backs China's push for a stronger multilateral international system, a position the two countries reaffirmed during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's recent state visit to Beijing.
What other meetings is Dar scheduled to attend in New York?
Dar will also attend a meeting of the Group of Friends on Global Governance during his stay, according to Pakistan Today. He will hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from various countries as well as senior U.N. officials to discuss regional and global developments and avenues for enhanced cooperation.
The visit comes directly after Dar traveled from Beijing, where he accompanied Sharif on a four-day state visit to China that concluded May 26.
Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Araghchi was expected to attend the same UNSC debate but was unable to do so after the United States denied him a visa, according to Dawn.
Who received Dar on his arrival in New York?
Upon arriving in New York, Dar was received by Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, and Pakistan's Consul General in New York, Aamer Ahmad Atozai.
The visit underscores Pakistan's continued engagement at the U.N. and its support for strengthening the role of the world body in addressing contemporary global challenges. Pakistan is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council.
