Pakistan has maintained adequate fuel supplies and is expanding relief measures for vulnerable groups amid the ongoing Gulf crisis, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Monday while chairing a high-level review meeting.

Officials briefed the meeting that sufficient petroleum stocks are available to meet current and future demand, with the prime minister noting that “timely decisions” had ensured uninterrupted fuel supply despite global disruptions.

Relief measures, austerity push

Sharif reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting low- and middle-income groups, saying economically vulnerable segments “would not be left alone during challenging times”.

The government has rejected multiple proposals to increase fuel prices, opting instead to redirect savings from austerity measures toward public relief initiatives.

These measures include reductions in government expenditures, cuts in the development budget and the immediate suspension of 60% of government vehicles.

“The process of sacrifice must begin with the government itself,” Sharif said, emphasizing efforts to promote simplicity and reduce unnecessary spending. An Intelligence Bureau audit report on the implementation of austerity measures was also presented.

Digital system for targeted support

Officials said coordination with provincial governments is underway to complete the registration of motorcycle and rickshaw owners to enable targeted delivery of relief.

Sharif stressed the importance of using digital systems to ensure assistance reaches citizens “efficiently and transparently.”

The meeting was also told that an increase in levy on high-octane fuel, mainly used by luxury vehicles, has not affected jet fuel prices.

Stocks of fuel, medicines adequate

Authorities confirmed that adequate stocks of essential medicines are available to meet domestic demand.

Sharif also highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement to promote peace in the region.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, along with federal ministers, advisers and senior officials.
