Pakistan welcomed the historic peace agreement signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia at the White House Summit under the auspices of U.S. President Donald J. Trump.

“We congratulate President Ilham Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan on this historic agreement that reflects wisdom, foresight, and sagacity in charting a course for a peaceful future for their region,” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a statement Saturday.

“Pakistan has always stood by the brotherly nation of Azerbaijan, and we stand with them at this proud moment of their history,” he added.

Sharif also expressed appreciation for Washington’s diplomatic role in securing the deal, crediting former President Trump’s leadership for making the agreement possible.

“We appreciate the facilitation role of the United States, under President Donald Trump, in bringing the two sides together,” the statement said, adding that the accord “opens new avenues for trade, connectivity, and regional integration.”

FM Dar applauds regional shift

Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar echoed the sentiment, calling the accord “a truly historic moment” and applauding President Aliyev’s leadership.

“I commend the vision and resolve shown by President Ilham Aliyev in steering this process, and deeply appreciate the role of President Donald Trump in facilitating this breakthrough,” Dar said.

He extended his “heartiest congratulations” to Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and expressed hope that the agreement would pave the way for a future “built on peace, stability, and hope” in the Caucasus.

Decades-long conflict sees breakthrough

The deal, finalized after months of behind-the-scenes diplomacy led by the Trump administration, signals the official end to hostilities over Nagorno-Karabakh, a long-disputed region that saw violent clashes between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces over the past three decades.

Signed in Washington, the accord outlines mutual recognition of borders, the return of displaced persons, and cooperation on regional infrastructure and trade routes.

The agreement follows a historic summit involving Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, hosted by President Trump at the White House.

Will Pakistan recognise Armenia?

Pakistan remains the only country in the world that does not recognize Armenia as an independent state. While Armenia is a UN member, Islamabad’s position is a principled protest against Yerevan’s human rights violations during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, particularly the ethnic cleansing of Azeri populations.

Pakistan’s deep alliance with Azerbaijan and Turkey further reinforces its stance, but officials say the core of its policy is rooted in opposition to the forcible change of international borders and in solidarity with Azerbaijan’s sovereignty.

With the signing of the peace agreement, questions are now being raised about whether Pakistan will reconsider its position.
