Pakistani filmmaker becomes first Emmy Awards judge from country

Umair Haroon, a documentary filmmaker and television producer from Pakistan, has been elected to judge the International Emmy Awards, becoming the first Pakistani to serve on the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (IATAS).

IATAS, which administers the Emmy Awards for television programming produced outside the United States, announced Haroon's election on Tuesday. He is currently the only Pakistani member serving on the organization.

Haroon has produced more than 200 documentaries and television projects during his career, including Pakistan's first forensic science television series. His work has focused on science-based and investigative storytelling.

"To stand at this platform is to solidify my commitment to using media as a force for education, justice, and cultural preservation," Haroon told the Associated Press of Pakistan. "I am immensely proud to represent a creative community that brings authenticity and depth to the global screen."

The IATAS, founded in 1969, has previously honored television figures including Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Shonda Rhimes. Membership is considered one of the highest professional achievements in the television industry.

Haroon joins other international industry leaders on the IATAS, including Nigerian producer Mo Abudu and Tunde Aina. His election marks increased visibility for Pakistani television content in international markets.
