Authorities in Seoul have reported alarming findings of toxic substances in women’s accessories sold by some of the world’s leading online shopping platforms, AFP reported.

Products from Chinese giants Shein, Temu, and AliExpress were found to contain hazardous chemicals at levels far exceeding safety standards, prompting a call for immediate action.

The rapid rise in popularity of these online retailers has sparked increased scrutiny of their safety practices. Recent inspections conducted by Seoul officials uncovered significant violations of legal limits in products from these platforms.

In the latest round of testing, 144 items from Shein, AliExpress, and Temu were examined. The results revealed multiple safety breaches across all three companies. Notably, shoes from Shein were found to have phthalates, chemicals used to make plastics more flexible at levels up to 229 times the legal limit. Phthalates have been linked to reproductive issues and other health risks.

Formaldehyde was detected in Shein’s caps at double the allowable level, while two bottles of Shein’s nail polish contained dioxane, a possible carcinogen, at levels more than 3.6 times the permitted limit. Additionally, methanol concentrations in the nail polish were 1.4 times higher than acceptable, reported AFP.

Temu's sandals were found to have lead in the insoles at more than 11 times the permissible level. In response, Temu has launched an internal investigation and removed the affected products from its marketplace.

Shein stated that it works closely with international third-party testing agencies to ensure product safety, and that its suppliers must comply with established safety standards. Meanwhile, Seoul authorities have demanded that all unsafe products be removed from sale and emphasized the need for vigilance regarding items that come into direct contact with the body.

Kim Tae-hee, an official from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, highlighted the importance of consumer awareness, especially concerning products like leather sandals and hats. The government plans to continue its periodic safety tests and make the results public.

The European Union has also taken steps to address these concerns by adding Shein to a list of digital firms subject to stricter safety regulations, aimed at protecting consumers from unsafe products.
