Pakistan’s former army chief, retired General Qamar Javed Bajwa, is in stable condition after sustaining injuries in a fall at his residence earlier this week, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Bajwa slipped in his washroom early on Tuesday morning and suffered head and other injuries, the sources said. He was taken to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Rawalpindi for treatment.
Reports said he briefly lost consciousness and experienced internal bleeding, with doctors closely monitoring him during the initial hours after his admission.
On Wednesday, his condition improved and he was shifted from the intensive care unit to a regular hospital ward, the sources said. He has regained consciousness and recognized family members and is expected to be discharged in the coming days.
The Pakistan Army has not issued an official statement regarding his health.
Bajwa served as Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff from November 2016 until November 2022. During his tenure, he received a three-year extension, making him one of the country’s longest-serving military chiefs in recent decades.
