A Pakistani court granted bail on Thursday to two men accused of assaulting a motorcyclist after a traffic collision earlier this month, in a case that drew widespread attention following the release of video footage online.

The Sindh High Court approved the bail petitions of Salman Farooqui and Owais Hashmi. Both men were ordered to deposit surety bonds of PKR 100,000 (about $360) each. The court also directed their release from custody upon payment.

A state prosecutor did not oppose the bail requests during Thursday’s hearing.

What’s the case?

The incident under investigation occurred earlier in June in the Defense Housing Authority (DHA), a residential neighborhood in Karachi.

According to police, the suspects were involved in an altercation after a motorcycle ridden by a man identified as Dheeraj collided with a vehicle belonging to Farooqui.

Video footage that circulated widely on social media showed a man repeatedly slapping the motorcyclist. The footage also showed a woman, identified as the motorcyclist’s sister, pleading for the man to stop.

The video prompted significant public outrage and calls for legal action. Authorities arrested the main suspect a day after the footage gained attention online. Farooqui and Hashmi were later brought to court by police from the Gizri police station.

Earlier this month, a lower court in Karachi granted police a two-day physical remand to question the suspects but rejected their initial bail applications.
