Pakistani security forces killed six suspected militants in an intelligence-based operation in Balochistan's Panjgur district overnight between June 3 and 4, the military said on Friday.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said forces acted on intelligence about militant presence in the area, as Pakistan presses ahead with its nationwide counterterrorism campaign amid rising militant violence.
What was the intelligence-based operation in Panjgur?
Security forces targeted multiple militant hideouts in Panjgur district on the night of June 3-4 after receiving actionable intelligence. Intense exchanges of fire followed.
Six suspected militants were killed and weapons, ammunition, improvised explosive devices and a vehicle were recovered from the site.
Who were the militants killed in the Balochistan operation?
The military identified the militants as "Fitna al Hindustan," a term Pakistani authorities have increasingly applied to insurgent groups operating in Balochistan. India has repeatedly denied Pakistani accusations of supporting militant activity inside the country.
The ISPR said those killed had been involved in several militant activities in the area. Follow-up sanitisation operations were continuing to ensure no other militants remained in the vicinity. The statement did not report any casualties among security personnel.
Why is Balochistan seeing a rise in militant operations?
Pakistan has witnessed a surge in attacks in recent years, particularly in Balochistan and the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Security forces have conducted frequent intelligence-based operations against both Islamist militants and separatist insurgent groups across both provinces.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to the Azm-e-Istehkam counterterrorism initiative, approved by the Federal Apex Committee under the National Action Plan. Operations would continue in coordination with law enforcement agencies to eliminate what the military described as foreign-sponsored militancy.
