The first trailer for I Play Rocky has been released, offering audiences a look at the true story behind one of Hollywood’s most celebrated success stories.

The biographical drama focuses on Sylvester Stallone’s life before he became an international star through Rocky, the 1976 film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture and launched a major film franchise.

According to the film’s premise, Stallone was struggling financially and trying to establish himself in the entertainment industry when Hollywood studios expressed interest in buying his screenplay for Rocky. He refused to sell the script unless he was cast in the lead role.

“If they want the script, they’ve got to take me,” Stallone famously insisted, a decision that helped shape his career and the future of the franchise.

Nearly 50 years after the release of Rocky, I Play Rocky revisits that period of Stallone’s life. Anthony Ippolito portrays the young actor as he navigates financial hardship, repeated rejection and the process of writing the screenplay that changed his fortunes.

The film is directed by Peter Farrelly, known for Green Book. Rather than focusing on Stallone’s celebrity status, the movie highlights the persistence and determination that preceded his success.

Stallone later became a global action star through franchises including Rocky, Rambo and The Expendables.

His popularity extended beyond the United States, including in Pakistan, where his films became widely watched across generations through VHS tapes and cable television. His action-hero characters gained a strong following among local audiences.

His influence in Pakistan was reflected in popular culture through veteran actor Afzal Khan, who rose to prominence playing Jan Rambo in PTV’s sitcom Guest House. Inspired by Stallone’s Rambo character, the role became so closely associated with Khan that he remains widely known as the “Pakistani Rambo.”

The release of I Play Rocky comes as biographical films continue to attract audiences interested in stories about the struggles behind high-profile success. The film is scheduled for release in cinemas in November 2026.
