The US Supreme Court on Monday rejected for a second time President Donald Trump's attempt to overturn a jury judgment that found he sexually assaulted and defamed writer E Jean Carroll. The court gave no reason for declining to hear the case.
Why did the Supreme Court reject Trump's appeal?
The Supreme Court did not explain its decision not to hear Trump's challenge. This is the second such rejection, after the court also declined in late June to hear his appeal against the original May 2023 verdict, leaving the jury's findings against him in place.
What did E Jean Carroll accuse Trump of?
Carroll, 82, a former journalist and columnist, accused Trump of assaulting her in a dressing room of a New York department store in 1996. When the allegations were published in a 2019 book she wrote, Trump called her a "nut job" and claimed she had fabricated her case.
How much has Trump paid Carroll?
Trump paid $5.6 million to Carroll last month after a civil jury found he sexually assaulted and defamed her. In a separate defamation case in New York, he was ordered to pay $83.3 million to Carroll, a judgment he has also appealed to the Supreme Court.
