The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced the successful mediation of a new prisoner exchange between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Ukraine, facilitating the release of 300 captives, according to UAE'S official news agency WAM.
The exchange, comprising 150 Ukrainian and 150 Russian captives, marks a significant step in ongoing diplomatic efforts amid the ongoing conflict.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) commended both Russia and Ukraine for their cooperation, underscoring the importance of diplomacy and trust in achieving the successful exchange.
This latest development brings the total number of captives exchanged through UAE mediation to 2,883.
“The success of this new mediation, the twelfth since the beginning of 2024, highlights the distinguished ties between the UAE and the two countries,” the ministry stated, emphasizing its role as a trusted and neutral facilitator.
The ministry further reiterated the UAE’s commitment to supporting all diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict and mitigating its humanitarian consequences, including the plight of refugees and captives.
Since the start of 2024, the UAE has successfully mediated ten previous prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine. Additionally, it played a pivotal role in securing a high-profile exchange of prisoners between the United States and Russia in December 2022.
The latest mediation underscores the UAE’s growing influence as a diplomatic actor on the global stage, leveraging its position to foster dialogue and cooperation in times of conflict.
The war in Ukraine, which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022, has led to extensive human suffering and geopolitical tensions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently estimated 45,100 Ukrainian soldiers killed and 390,000 wounded, with Russian casualties at 350,000 killed and up to 700,000 injured. He also noted many remain missing in action.
Despite numerous international efforts to broker peace, fighting continues across key regions. Diplomatic interventions, such as those led by the UAE, have offered rare glimmers of hope amid the prolonged hostilities.
Efforts to exchange captives have been viewed as critical confidence-building measures that could pave the way for broader peace negotiations. However, experts caution that achieving a lasting resolution will require sustained international engagement and concessions from both parties.
As the conflict enters its fourth year, nations and mediators continue to call for a peaceful resolution and intensified humanitarian efforts to address the crisis' impact on millions of civilians.
