A United Nations official has highlighted the United Arab Emirates’ expanding use of soft power as a tool for promoting peace, dialogue and multilateral cooperation on the global stage.
David Fernández Puyana, Ambassador and Permanent Observer of the United Nations University for Peace to the UN Office in Geneva, said the UAE has emerged as a leading example of how diplomacy, dialogue and international engagement can be leveraged to foster consensus and resolve disputes.
Speaking to Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of an event marking the International Day of Human Fraternity at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Puyana said the UAE’s role in hosting major international gatherings underscores its commitment to advancing mutual understanding and peaceful conflict resolution.
He described the International Day of Human Fraternity as a global appeal to strengthen multilateralism and deepen international cooperation at a time of increasing geopolitical tensions. Holding the commemoration at the UN headquarters in Geneva for the first time, he added, reflects efforts to elevate the concept of human fraternity within international institutions.
Puyana also pointed to the UN General Assembly’s adoption of a resolution establishing the International Day of Human Fraternity as recognition of the UAE’s contributions to promoting tolerance, coexistence and interfaith dialogue.
He praised the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, describing it as a practical framework for translating the principles of dialogue and mutual respect into concrete initiatives. Promoting these values at both institutional and community levels, he said, is essential for building inclusive societies and laying the foundation for long-term peace and stability.
