The United States Mission in Pakistan marked the 250th anniversary of American independence on Thursday at a reception in Islamabad, with both U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Natalie A. Baker and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif describing a transformed strategic partnership between Washington and Islamabad. Baker credited President Donald Trump's direct engagement with Pakistan's leadership, while Sharif pointed to eight decades of bilateral cooperation spanning counterterrorism, trade, investment, and people-to-people ties.

What is the current state of the U.S.-Pakistan strategic partnership?

Baker described the relationship as a strategic partnership built on mutual respect, shared interests, and common goals for regional security and economic prosperity. Sharif said cooperation between the two countries covers counterterrorism, trade, investment, agriculture, education, health, and energy. He noted that around 80 major American companies are currently operating in Pakistan, and that Pakistani graduates of U.S. institutions continue to contribute significantly to the country's economy.

Sharif recalled that the United States was among the first countries to recognize Pakistan after its independence, and highlighted decades of joint work on the Green Revolution, the Tarbela Dam project, infrastructure, and education. He also pointed to the Pakistani-American community, estimated at around one million people, as a vital bridge between the two nations. Pakistani doctors serving in leading U.S. hospitals and a growing freelance workforce featured among the examples he cited.

What role did Pakistan play in U.S.-Iran diplomacy?

Baker praised Pakistan's role in facilitating the highest-level talks between Washington and Tehran since the 1979 Iranian Revolution. She said Pakistan's relationships with both countries placed Islamabad in a unique position to bring the two longtime adversaries to the negotiating table. "It was Pakistan's moment, and Pakistan rose to it," she said.

Sharif echoed that assessment, stating that Pakistan is playing the role of a sincere mediator between the United States and Iran, and expressed gratitude to both countries for their confidence in Islamabad's efforts. He also commended Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his role in advancing Pakistan's regional peace initiatives. Sharif referred to a recent meeting in Washington between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, describing it as a positive step for bilateral relations and regional cooperation.

What did PM Sharif say about Trump's role in South Asia?

Sharif praised Trump's intervention in helping secure a ceasefire between Pakistan and India, describing him as a leader who would be remembered as a man of peace for his contribution to stability in South Asia. He congratulated Trump, the American administration, and the American people on the 250th anniversary. "The history of the United States is a story of hope and enlightenment," Sharif said, describing it as a testament to the belief that hard work can build a better future.

How is Pakistan connected to the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Baker highlighted Pakistan's contribution to the FIFA World Cup 2026, noting that footballs produced in Pakistan will be used throughout the tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. "When fans around the world watch the beautiful game this summer, they will be watching, in a very real sense, a product of Pakistani craftsmanship and skill," she said. The remark formed part of a broader emphasis on people-to-people ties between the two nations.

Baker also described her experiences traveling across Pakistan, including attending the revival of Lahore's historic Basant kite festival after nearly two decades and visiting remote communities in interior Sindh. The reception featured 16 replicas of the Liberty Bell painted by Pakistani artists and students through the U.S. Embassy's Lincoln Corner network, offering diverse interpretations of freedom, democracy, and opportunity.

Both officials closed on an optimistic note. Baker said she believed the most significant chapter of U.S.-Pakistan cooperation was still to come, while Sharif voiced confidence that the friendship between the two countries would continue to deepen in the years ahead.
