Why Tim Burton's Walk of Fame star is well-deserved
Film director Tim Burton was honored with a star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame just days ahead of the release of his much-awaited film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The director was joined by his longtime collaborators, actors Micheal Keaton, Danny DeVito, and Winona Ryder for the ceremony.
The actors praised Burton for his out-of-the-box yet inclusive thought process. The location of the star is also significant as it is situated right outside the Hollywood Toys and Costumes store that Burton would frequent as a child. The store also decorated a whole wall with toys and costumes to honor Burton’s art.
Tim Burton made his directorial debut with Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure (1985) and has since set the world ablaze with multiple films and television series that have awed audiences. Here is a list of Tim Burton projects we feel are essential to watch for everyone:
Beetlejuice (1988)
Beetlejuice was a breakthrough in the horror/comedy genre when it initially made it to the cinemas. Burton was working on the script for Batman and Warner Brothers did not trust him with such a big project, hence he worked on Beetlejuice. Starring Micheal Keaton and Winona Ryder, the story revolves around the Maitland family and how they come to terms with being ghosts after drowning in a river as a result of a road accident. The movie grossed over $75 million worldwide, having been made with a budget of merely $15 million, and set the tone for things to come.
Batman (1989)
Batman was the first live-action outing for the Caped Crusader and was brilliantly helmed by Tim Burton. The movie is considered an all-time classic as it inspired an entire overhaul of the Batman character and inspired Batman: The Animated Series, which propelled the character’s popularity to new heights. Burton’s portrayal of a dark gothic Batman coupled with Jack Nicholson’s maniacal portrayal of the Joker hit a nerve with global audiences and was also the film that propelled Burton to Hollywood’s A-list.
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Edward Scissorhands was a character Burton conceived in his childhood growing up in Burbank, California. The then-teenaged Burton drew a drawing of Scissorhands as a reflection of his feelings of isolation and being unable to communicate with people. The film came together when Burton found his Scissorhands in actor Johnny Depp, who played the role to perfection. The story is a beautiful tale of how looks can deceive and do not determine what a person may truly be like.
Corpse Bride (2005)
Tim Burton also ventured into animation, specifically stop-motion techniques. This led to the creation of some beautiful masterpieces such as The Nightmare Before Christmas. His second stop-motion outing, Corpse Bride, was based on a 17th-century Jewish folklore tale, which Burton was introduced to while wrapping up filming on Nightmare.
Featuring voices from Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, the story follows Victor, who is preparing to marry the love of his life but accidentally marries a corpse named Emily. What happens next makes this film an enjoyable watch, thanks to Burton's outstanding direction and the cast's excellent voice acting.
Wednesday (2022)
Tim Burton’s foray into the world of digital streaming could not have been slicker than The Addams Family spinoff Wednesday. Starring Jenna Ortega, as Wednesday, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Luis Guzman as Mr. and Mrs. Addams, the series explores the life of Wednesday and the difficulty she faces interacting with her schoolmates at her parent’s former high school Nevermore High.
Wednesday’s cold-hearted demeanor and lack of empathy hinder her from relating to her teachers, schoolmates, and her parents. The story has the quintessential Tim Burton look and feel to it and represents the director’s effortless transition from film to digital streaming as the show is set to return for a second season soon.
