The United Arab Emirates has lifted a partial ban on drones for individuals, effective Jan. 7.

The move, announced by the UAE Ministry of Interior, allows private drone enthusiasts to operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in certain areas under new regulations.

This decision marks a significant milestone for recreational drone operators in the UAE, who were previously restricted by a nationwide ban introduced in 2022 due to security concerns.

The partial lifting of the ban is part of a phased rollout, with the initial phase launched in November 2024 for companies and government agencies.

Strict guidelines to ensure safety and compliance

Drone operations for individuals are subject to stringent safety conditions to protect the community and airspace. Recreational drones must weigh 5 kg or less and can only be flown in designated green zones listed on the “My Drone Hub” app.

Additional regulations include:

  • Flying permitted only during daytime and under clear weather conditions.
  • A height limit of 400 feet above ground level.
  • Prohibition of flights near airports, heliports, and restricted zones within a 5-km radius.

All drones must also be registered through the Unified National Drone Platform, which simplifies the process and ensures compliance with the UAE’s regulatory framework.

Aligning with the UAE’s vision for innovation

The reintroduction of individual drone operations aligns with the UAE’s “We the UAE 2031” vision, focusing on fostering technological innovation while maintaining public safety.

The regulatory framework ensures drones are used responsibly, adhering to strict privacy and safety protocols. For example, camera-equipped drones are only permitted in designated areas and must comply with privacy laws.

What does this mean for drone enthusiasts?

The partial lifting of the ban paves the way for individuals to explore the skies for recreational purposes. However, the UAE has emphasized that compliance is mandatory. From registering drones on the UAE Drones app to adhering to operational rules, users must prioritize safety.
