Pakistan-administered Kashmir will hold general elections on July 27, the territory's Election Commission announced Friday.

Chief Election Commissioner Ghulam Mustafa Mughal said preparations were underway to ensure the polls are peaceful, transparent and credible, even as a political dispute over refugee representation and a planned protest raise tensions ahead of polling day.

When are the elections and what is the controversy about?

The Election Commission of Pakistan-administered Kashmir has set July 27 as the date for general elections to the territory's legislative assembly.

The announcement comes amid a dispute over seats reserved for refugees from Jammu and Kashmir living in Pakistan. The Joint Awami Action Committee has demanded those seats be abolished before a new assembly is formed.

What security arrangements are in place for the elections?

Mughal said the Election Commission has sought assistance from the army and Rangers to ensure elections are conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.

The commission has committed to taking all necessary measures so voters can exercise their democratic rights without difficulty. Authorities are treating the security situation as a serious logistical challenge in the lead-up to polling day.

The security concerns are tied directly to a protest the JAAC has planned for June 9. The group has announced a sit-in outside the Kashmir Assembly to press authorities to meet its demands, including the abolition of refugee seats.

Inspector General of Police Liaqat Ali has proposed deploying 14,000 additional security personnel and has formally sought federal government assistance through the region's chief secretary.

Why has the Pakistan-administered Kashmir government issued a travel advisory?

The regional government has urged tourists and visitors to avoid travel to Pakistan-administered Kashmir between June 5 and June 20, citing the security situation and the possibility of disruptions linked to the planned protests.

The advisory reflects official concern that demonstrations could affect public movement and order across the territory in the days immediately ahead.

The election announcement arrives as political tensions continue to shape the pre-election environment in the Himalayan region. The refugee seats issue has been a recurring flashpoint, with the JAAC leading several mass protests in recent years over governance and representation.
