Pakistani police have charged a British-born man with terrorism and assault after a violent confrontation with traffic officers in the capital, an incident that went viral online and sparked widespread outrage.

According to a police report seen by Nukta, the suspect, 27-year-old Aqib Khan, a British-born Pakistani from Birmingham, allegedly attacked a traffic police officer near Islamabad’s I-8 Markaz on Saturday evening. Police said Khan tried to run over the officers with his car and later opened fire during a chase.

The First Information Report (FIR) states that Khan snatched an official wireless set, tore a police officer’s uniform, and physically assaulted the team. When another unit attempted to intercept him, he allegedly fired from his vehicle, spreading panic in the area.

Police have registered a case under Pakistan’s Anti-Terrorism Act (Section 7 ATA) and several provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code, including Sections 279, 506(ii), 353, 186, 324, and 382.

Sources told Nukta that Khan moved to Pakistan last year after facing legal issues in the United Kingdom. He reportedly lives off rental income from his family’s properties and has previously been accused of involvement in violent incidents in Islamabad.

Islamabad police said the suspect’s actions amounted to “terrorizing law enforcement” and pledged strict action against anyone who attacks officers on duty.

As of Sunday evening, Khan remained in police custody. His family has not yet issued any public statement.
