Dubai has launched its first PhD program in artificial intelligence, marking a significant milestone in the emirate’s effort to position itself as a global hub for AI innovation.
The University of Birmingham Dubai announced the new program during the opening of Dubai AI Week 2025, in a ceremony witnessed by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai Future Foundation.
“This program will help develop specialized talent in key areas of artificial intelligence, including smart city development, advanced healthcare, sustainability, and future mobility,” Sheikh Hamdan said.
“The academic sector plays a key role in shaping our future. Its contribution is crucial in preparing the talent and expertise required to drive Dubai’s future readiness.”
According to the Dubai Media Office, the launch supports the UAE’s National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031 and underscores the emirate’s long-term vision to foster innovation through advanced education and research.
The PhD program is fully accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education’s Commission for Academic Accreditation. Students will explore diverse areas such as AI in medicine and healthcare, computer vision, natural language processing, AI ethics and regulation, and explainable AI.
The curriculum includes advanced research training and access to AI labs, incubators, and government-led innovation platforms.
The initiative was developed in partnership with the UAE National Program for Artificial Intelligence and reflects the country’s drive to empower future generations with cutting-edge skills.
His Excellency Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence and Deputy Managing Director of the Dubai Future Foundation, also attended the event.
Dubai AI Week, running from April 21 to 25, is hosted by the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence, an initiative of the Dubai Future Foundation under Sheikh Hamdan’s patronage.
The five-day gathering brings together global tech leaders, startups, policymakers, and investors to advance the international AI agenda.
