India's opposition Congress party initiated breach-of-privilege proceedings in New Delhi against Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The opposition accused Singh of misleading Parliament over military casualties from a 2025 border conflict with Pakistan, The Hindu reported.

The political row erupted following the official online publication of six fallen soldiers' names on the National War Memorial website.

Why is the opposition accusing Rajnath Singh of misleading Parliament over military casualties?

The opposition is accusing Rajnath Singh of misleading Parliament over military casualties because he claimed in July 2025 that no Indian soldiers died during the cross-border conflict.

However, the government recently published a Roll of Honour naming six personnel who were killed during the military operation.

Senior Congress leader K.C. Venugopal formally submitted a notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking a privilege motion against the Defence Minister.

Venugopal accused Singh of delivering a clear-cut lie to the House during a parliamentary debate last year. He asserted that withholding operational fatality information from the legislature constitutes a severe breach of privilege and contempt.

Representatives from the Congress’s Ex-servicemen Department stepped up their political attack by demanding a public apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Retired Colonel Rohit Chaudhry and retired Wing Commander Anuma Acharya accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of using soldiers as political props. They claimed the administration intentionally concealed operational fatalities for 13 months to win votes during elections.

What was the cause of the 2025 military conflict between India and Pakistan?

The intense border escalation began on May 7, 2025, after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam killed 26 people, who were mostly tourists.

India launched Operation Sindoor in the early hours to execute precision strikes on various terror-linked infrastructure targets. The initial strikes triggered intense retaliatory aerial dogfights between the two rival nuclear-armed nations before international diplomats intervened to broker a ceasefire.

The brief military conflict concluded on May 10, 2025, after both governments agreed to halt aerial engagements following intense global pressure.

The official identities of the six fallen service members remained undisclosed until the forces updated the National War Memorial website on June 26.

This sudden disclosure marked the first official government acknowledgment that Indian troops suffered operational fatalities during the brief encounter.

The Indian Defence Ministry strongly rejected the opposition’s allegations of a cover-up and maintained that the minister's historical remarks were stripped of context.

Officials explained that Singh’s parliamentary statement specifically countered a false narrative claiming that Indian Air Force pilots were captured or killed. Government representatives asserted that the nation has honored the fallen personnel at the earliest opportunity with due dignity.
