Pakistan’s top judicial appointments body on Tuesday endorsed nominees for two provincial chief justices and approved the elevation of a senior judge to the Supreme Court, in decisions that will now move to the parliamentary committee for confirmation.
The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), chaired by the chief justice of Pakistan, met in Islamabad to finalize a slate of recommendations, the Supreme Court said in a statement.
The Commission unanimously backed Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput, the acting chief justice of the Sindh High Court, to take over the court permanently. It also endorsed Justice Muhammad Kamran Khan Mulakhail, currently serving as acting chief justice of the Balochistan High Court, for the top post in that province.
The JCP separately approved by majority the nomination of Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb - an Islamabad High Court judge who is serving as an acting Supreme Court judge - for elevation to the Supreme Court.
In addition to the appointments, the Commission formed a committee to draft rules under Article 175A of the Constitution, which governs the judicial appointment process.
The panel includes Federal Constitutional Court Justice Aamer Farooq, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, Senators Farooq Hamid Naek and Syed Ali Zafar, and senior lawyer Muhammad Ahsan Bhoon.
