Pakistan’s KP chief minister's remarks on security forces trigger controversy

Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has drawn widespread criticism after making statements perceived as critical of Pakistan’s security forces, escalating tensions between the PTI-led provincial government and federal authorities.

Afridi made the remarks on November 7 outside Adiala Jail after being denied a meeting with jailed PTI founder Imran Khan, accusing security personnel of “disrespecting mosques” and “using fake videos for propaganda.”

He said that “security forces used to tie dogs inside our mosques. We were told there’s no difference between dogs and us,” comments that sparked immediate controversy and condemnation across the country.

The remarks came amid ongoing protests by PTI supporters against the proposed 27th constitutional amendment, which the party argues would undermine provincial autonomy. Political leaders from various parties condemned Afridi’s statements, highlighting concerns over the potential impact on national unity and morale.

Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi criticized Afridi’s comments, saying they dishonored the sacrifices of more than 1,000 security personnel who lost their lives in KP. He urged Afridi to apologize to the families of the fallen, adding that “such irresponsible remarks wound the unity of the nation.”

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also described the comments as “irresponsible” and “demoralizing,” warning that such rhetoric could embolden militant activity amid rising terrorist threats.

Cautionary voices also came from former PTI officials. Ex-Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry urged Afridi to exercise restraint, warning that his remarks could undermine efforts for Imran Khan’s release and strain relations with key state institutions.
