London Mayor Sadiq Khan was appointed to the House of Lords, parliament's upper chamber, on Thursday by outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The move comes days before Starmer hands power to Andy Burnham on Monday.

Why was Sadiq Khan appointed to the House of Lords?

Khan was one of 26 new appointments confirmed by the government as Starmer prepared to leave office.

The appointment lets Khan and the other new peers, who come from across the political spectrum and various professional backgrounds, take part in the lawmaking process.

What does the House of Lords do?

The upper chamber typically revises and scrutinizes laws put forward by the elected House of Commons. It has occasionally become the site of prolonged battles over the principles of proposed legislation.

Members are not elected but appointed, often for their expertise or political service.

Will Sadiq Khan still be mayor of London?

Khan will continue serving as the elected mayor of London alongside his new role in the Lords. His peerage could allow Starmer's successor to hand him a ministerial portfolio when the new government is named next week, though no such role has been confirmed.
