While the Northern Lights dazzled skies across the globe, the UAE had its own magical moment. Instead of lights above, it was sparkles below at several beaches all over the Emirates. Khorfakhan beach, sunset beach Jumeirah and Umm Al Quain were one of them. Imagine tiny blue glimmers lighting up the sand at night!

The Science Behind The Glow

Bioluminescent plankton, or dinoflagellates, create light through a cool process called bioluminescence. It happens when a special molecule called luciferin and an enzyme named luciferase mix together. When these two meet oxygen, they create light. This glowing effect isn't just pretty; it's also a smart way for the plankton to protect themselves from predators.

The phenomenon of bioluminescence has been given many names, including sea sparkle, blue tears, and the aurora of the sea.30 A

Bioluminescent Beaches Around The World

Vaadhoo Island, Maldives

Vaadhoo Island in the Maldives is famous for its bioluminescent beach, where the waters are illuminated by phytoplankton known as dinoflagellates.

Toyama Bay, Japan

Toyama Bay in Japan is famous for its glowing firefly squid. These small squid emit a blue bioluminescent glow, creating a beautiful sight when they gather in large numbers.

Laguna Grande, Fajardo, Puerto Rico

Laguna Grande in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, is another bioluminescent bay worth visiting. The bay is home to millions of dinoflagellates that light up when disturbed, creating a magical glow in the water. Visitors can take guided kayak tours to experience this natural wonder up close.
