Cotton production in Pakistan to see a major decline of more than 46% from the target of 10.2 million bales assessed for this season.
The government has fixed a target of 10.2 million bales whereas output to reach 5.6 million bales. During the season of 2024 arrivals of cotton bales were around 5.5 million bales.
Pakistan’s cotton output recorded a marginal decline during the ongoing season, with arrivals standing at 5.434 million bales as of Dec. 31, according to the latest data released by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA).
The figure compares with 5.452 million bales recorded during the same period last season, reflecting a slight year-on-year decrease in production.
Data showed that textile millers purchased 4.708 million bales during the period under review, down from nearly 4.8 million bales bought during the corresponding period last year, indicating relatively subdued buying activity from the industry.
Provincial data revealed a notable shift in production patterns, with Sindh overtaking Punjab in cotton output for the first time. Cotton production in Sindh reached 2.893 million bales, while Punjab’s output stood at around 2.54 million bales.
Compared with last season, cotton production in Sindh increased by 3.6%, whereas Punjab recorded a decline of 4.5%, highlighting contrasting trends between the two major cotton-producing provinces.
Industry stakeholders attribute the changes in output to weather conditions, pest pressure and shifts in cultivated area, factors that continue to influence Pakistan’s cotton sector.
