Pakistan, Saudi Arabia sign security cooperation MoU amid Gulf tensions

The memorandum of understanding expands bilateral cooperation on security issues and deepens institutional ties between the two countries' interior ministries.

Pakistan's Ministry of Interior

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on security cooperation after talks between the countries' interior ministers in Riyadh, Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif said.

The deal comes amid rising Middle East tensions despite an interim U.S.-Iran peace deal reached last month.

What did Pakistan and Saudi Arabia agree to?

The memorandum of understanding expands bilateral cooperation on security issues and deepens institutional ties between the two countries' interior ministries, according to Prince Abdulaziz.

It builds on the strategic partnership between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan and reflects the countries' shared commitment to strengthening security sector cooperation, the Saudi minister said in a statement.

Who signed the security cooperation agreement?

Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif, Saudi Arabia's interior minister, signed the agreement alongside Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Pakistan's federal minister for interior and narcotics control.

The meeting was held under directives from Saudi leadership, Prince Abdulaziz said. He described the MoU as a reflection of the strong strategic partnership and longstanding ties between the two countries.

How does the new MoU build on the 2025 defense pact?

The security cooperation MoU follows a mutual defense pact that Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed in Riyadh last year. That agreement, signed Sept. 17, states that an attack on one country would be considered an attack on the other.

It marked the first time Pakistan, the Muslim world's only nuclear-armed state, and Saudi Arabia, the region's largest economy, formally committed to a joint security framework.

Why does the timing of the agreement matter?

The new MoU comes amid continuing tensions in the Middle East, despite an interim U.S.-Iran peace deal reached last month.

The United States and Iran have since exchanged fire in the Gulf. That exchange has underscored the difficulty of turning the initial truce into a lasting settlement.
