Cricket Australia has named its squads for the upcoming limited-overs tours of Pakistan and Bangladesh, with teenage batter Oliver Peake and all-rounder Liam Scott receiving their first senior international call-ups. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood have all been rested. Australia begin their Pakistan ODI series on May 30, with matches in Rawalpindi and Lahore.
Who is in Australia's squad for the Pakistan ODI series?
Mitchell Marsh will captain a 15-man squad for the Pakistan ODIs, which includes uncapped pair Oliver Peake and Liam Scott. Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood are absent as selectors manage their workloads ahead of the home Test series against Bangladesh. Riley Meredith and Billy Stanlake return to the pace attack in their absence.
Why are Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood missing from the Pakistan series?
The pace trio will not feature in either the Pakistan or Bangladesh leg of the tour. After returning from injuries during the IPL, selectors have opted to shift their focus toward red-ball preparation for the two-Test home series against Bangladesh in August.
Chair of selectors George Bailey said the blend of experienced and emerging players would provide a strong mix for the subcontinent conditions.
Which IPL players will miss the Pakistan ODIs?
Several players involved in the IPL playoff campaign will be unavailable for the Pakistan leg of the tour. Travis Head, Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett, and Ben Dwarshuis are all expected to feature in the knockout stage, scheduled from May 26 to 31. The four will join the squad ahead of the Bangladesh ODI series, which begins on June 9.
Who are the uncapped players in Australia's touring squads?
Nineteen-year-old Peake, who previously captained Australia's Under-19 side, earns his first senior call-up for the Pakistan ODIs. He will not travel to Bangladesh, where the returning IPL players come back into the squad. Liam Scott, 25, has also earned a maiden ODI call-up, while 22-year-old left-arm spinning all-rounder Joel Davies has been named in the T20 squad for the Bangladesh leg.
What happened to Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis?
Both Maxwell and Stoinis have been left out of the T20 squad following Australia's group-stage exit at the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Maxwell will instead play the full Major League Cricket season in the United States with Washington Freedom. Stoinis is also absent from the T20 group as Australia look to reshape the side ahead of the next cycle.
Bailey welcomed the new faces across the three squads.
"It's always exciting to see new players get an opportunity to play international cricket and be a part of the national team," he said. "The blend of experienced players coupled with new or returning players will provide a nice mix for these subcontinent tours."
