Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) filed a formal contempt of court petition before the Supreme Court on Saturday, August 22, 2026, targeting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, federal cabinet ministers, and senior administrative officials. The petition alleges deliberate non-compliance with the apex court's August 18 order mandating the transfer of party founder Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital for comprehensive medical evaluation.
What relief does PTI seek in its contempt petition against government officials?]
The legal challenge, submitted by senior advocates Uzair Bhandari and PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, urges the Supreme Court to issue show-cause notices to respondents and order their personal appearance before the bench. The filing requests that the court declare the officials guilty of contempt, execute immediate measures to shift Khan to Shifa International Hospital, and appoint a local commission or judicial officer to oversee full implementation of the court's instructions.
In addition to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the petition names Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, the Interior Secretary, Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Inspector General of Prisons Punjab, and the Adiala Jail Superintendent as respondents. Speaking to news outlets outside the Supreme Court, Salman Akram Raja noted that while weekend filings are processed administratively, the petition is expected to be taken up for hearing by early next week.
Why did PTI accuse federal authorities of violating Supreme Court orders?
The contempt plea centers on the overnight events of August 20–21, during which security forces diverted Khan to the government-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) rather than Shifa International Hospital. The petition details that Khan's personal physician, Dr. Faisal Sultan, and his sister, Dr. Uzma Khan, were subjected to hours of delay at Adiala Jail and Shifa Hospital without receiving clear information regarding his medical treatment or the constitution of a proper multidisciplinary board.
The federal government defended the rerouting to PIMS as a necessary operational decision driven by security concerns near the private facility. However, PTI lawyers contend that government ministers publicly questioned the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court's order while orchestrating a diversion that bypassed the specific medical protocols established by the three-member judicial bench
