Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz during a phone call.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said the two ministers also addressed ongoing diplomatic efforts over the Iran conflict, according to Al Jazeera.

What did Russia and the UAE discuss about the Strait of Hormuz?

The two foreign ministers focused their call on the situation around the Strait of Hormuz, including deliberations on the issue at the United Nations. Russia stressed the need to support ongoing negotiation efforts between Iran and the United States.

The ministers agreed to remain in contact and work toward aligning the approaches of all parties involved in finding a long-term settlement.

What is Russia's position on the Iran conflict?

Moscow reiterated that renewed fighting would further destabilize the region and worsen the humanitarian impact of the conflict.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said the "prospects for stabilization must not be jeopardized by a resumption of hostilities, which would cause civilian casualties and damage civilian infrastructure both in Iran and neighboring countries." The statement reflected Moscow's consistent push for a negotiated resolution.

The talks come amid heightened regional instability following the outbreak of war between Iran and the United States and Israel, triggered by coordinated US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in late February.

The conflict has since prompted retaliatory attacks across the Gulf, widespread disruptions to shipping routes, and growing international concern over the security of the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is a vital artery for global oil supplies.

Recent weeks have seen repeated maritime incidents, attacks on Gulf states hosting US military facilities, and intermittent clashes near the strait, despite fragile ceasefire arrangements and mediation efforts led by regional actors including Pakistan.

Russia's engagement with the UAE reflects broader international efforts to prevent further escalation as diplomatic channels remain active but unresolved.
